Taobao: China's Ebay

if you've been in China for awhile, and you happen to ask someone, particularly from the younger set, where to buy this and that, most likely they'd tell you to check the price first online.

that's the first time i came across taobao.

although, i'm not so crazy about buying things online, i do check the site to see how much that certain product really is. and although most of the time, it's cheaper than in stores, at least you have an idea, where your bargaining limit is.

however, as time passes by, i've noticed most of my colleagues, getting packages weekly and fast. because some weeks ago they have been debating whether to get this or that, then a week later it's in their hands already.

ok now, curiosity has turned to envy:

what do i need to do to buy from taobao. well, since i'm not chinese and i'm not keen on getting an account myself (you need to have an account with your bank details to be able to payup online) i seek the help of a taobao friend of mine who buys there weekly. i just share the shipping costs with her and pay her directly.

second you search in the small box which item you want. usually they accept the brand names in english, but to make it faster and more precise, ask someone to translate it for you.

"fanyi, please"

then you have to check if the seller's reputation is good, and also if they have a nearby store near your area. normally, the list of sellers could be screened according to their location. now, you have an option to buy them offline as well.

then among the lists, you take your pick. (i usually pick the cheapest lol) then voila order it down. in a week or so you'd get them fast.
